FIDE-International Chess Federation announced that the 2020 Online Olympiad will be played from 22nd July to 30th August.
According to FIDE, the salient features of the event are:
- The online event will be divided into two main stages – Divisions stage and Play-offs stage, from the Round of 16 to the final.
- The Online Olympiad is a national team event.
- All FIDE affiliated federations can participate.
- Each participating team will include six players.
- In mixed format a minimum quota of three female players and two junior players.
- The teams are authorized to have six reserve players, including a captain.
- The time control for the event will be 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move.

The Registration process was announced as follows:
- Forms will be published on the FIDE website in the coming days.
- Registration will open on 4th July.
- All the affiliated national federations will receive instructions via email.
