New Zealand vs England Series – 1st Test: Day 1 – Summary and Analysis

1.   After England clinched the ODI series from New Zealand the hosts were surely looking to bounce back. The Kiwis had set their eyes on the two tests that were to be played between the two teams this summer.

2.   It was day 1 of the first test today and New Zealand looked in red-hot form as they dominated first with the ball and then later on with the bat. England had no answer to the superb brilliance of New Zealand on the field.

3.   The toss was won by New Zealand and they chose to field first on a wicket that seemed ripe for fast bowling.

4.   The Kiwi spearheads Boult and Southee were given the new ball and they used it to the full extent as they ripped England’s line-up with amazing swing bowling.

5.   Apart from Stoneman and Craig Overton no English batsman managed to score in the double figures. A total of 5 ducks were a part of England’s innings as they were slumped by the Kiwis for 58 runs.

6.   It was now time for New Zealand to score a big total and score a handsome lead. Meanwhile, England’s fast bowlers had the task to get the Kiwi batsmen out without consuming much runs.

7.   The Kiwi innings started with Raval and Latham on the crease and Anderson with the new ball.

8.   England bowlers started excellently as they bowled at the right length and got quite a few maidens in there. And, after only 8 overs Anderson struck and sent Raval back to the pavilion leaving New Zealand 1-8.

9.   Kane Williamson now joined his partner in the middle and both batsmen shared a superb 84-run partnership before Latham became a victim of Stuart Broad’s lovely bowling.

10. This was also the 400^th Test wicket of Broad; an exceptional achievement in world cricket.

11. Taylor came onto the crease looking to build a partnership but he departed ten overs later while attempting a pull shot off James Anderson.

12. England needed more wickets but the Kiwis were not looking in a gifting mood. Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson saw the day off with a strong 50-run partnership and denied any wickets to England.

13. It was a riveting first day that saw 13 wickets fall in 2 innings. New Zealand with a lead of 117 are definitely on top and they will look to build on this innings the next day too.
