Hong Kong’s sports landscape suffered another setback as the International Rugby Tens – a prelude to Sevens tournament- has been cancelled due to on-going protests in the city.
The Tens had been scheduled on 1st-2nd April 2020 leading to the main event from April 3rd-5th in 2020. However, the organizers clarified that the Sevens will continue as planned because they are a part of International Rugby series.
According to the local media reports, the decision to cancel the 10-each-side tournament was made after several prominent teams declined to participate in the event on account of political instability and security issues in the city.
The Classic Wallabies were the only major team that agreed to play in 2020 as several others backed out ahead of the planned draw this month.
Hong Kong has been embroiled in a spate of protests and deadly clashes between protesters and police for six months now. The chaos and instability caused by violent protests have caused a number of major sports events to be cancelled or postponed including Hong Kong Open Tennis, Hong Kong Squash Open, Hong Kong Open
golf tournament and Formula E Grand Prix.
