Spain’s Rafael Nadal powered through a frustrating match against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka to secure a spot for Spain in the final eights of ATP Cup 2020.
The World No. 1 engaged in a spectacular battle of wits that lasted for over two hours in Perth finally claiming a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory.
Earlier, Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut continued his win streak at ATP Cup beating Go Soeda 6-2, 6-4 in singles to assist his team’s advance to the next stage.
Meanwhile, Team France’s captain Gilles Simon won his singles match against South African Lloyd Harris 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to keep his side’s hopes alive for final eights.
Groups C, D and F have played all their matches with Russia, Australia and Great Britain managing to qualify for the final eights.
As of right now, five teams have qualified for the next round with France poised to be the sixth team to do so. Then the two remaining slots will be allotted to the second position teams in any of the six groups.
A number of countries including a few surprising wins have been made to exit the championship. Germany, Greece and USA were considered strong candidates for the final eights but could not qualify.
