22-year-old Collin Morikawa battled strong winds as well as his professional inexperience to grab the top spot at the first round of Sony Open in Hawaii.
The Young American golfer did pull off some errant shots but luck was on his side as he managed to close the round five-under-par 65 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Four golfers including Australia’s Matt Jones and USA’s Sam Ryder, Ryan Palmer and Ted potter all came in second place with three-under-par 67. Rounds on the first day of Sony Open 2020.
The inaugural round was prematurely suspended due to bad lighting and strong winds as many players were still on the course with hopes of revival some time soon.
Despite his first day lead, Morikawa is still a long way from the leaderboard with defending champion Matt Kuchar aiming to win his second Sony win.
Meanwhile, Justin Thomas who survived the playoff at Sunday’s Sentry Champions Tournament is being pitched as the favorite to win this week as well.
Contested at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu in US state of Hawaii since 1965, The Sony Open is a professional golf tournament part of both the PGA Tour and the FedEx Cup Series.
