UEFA confirmed that the next women’s European Championship in England will be staged from 6th -31st July, 2022.
Due to Coronavirus attack the competition was shifted back after the earlier decision to delay by an year, the men’s European Championship to 2021. It was also the desire of UEFA management to avoid a clash of the two tournaments.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin clarified that “When we had to take an urgent decision on the postponement of UEFA Euro 2020, we always had the impact on UEFA women’s Euro 2021 in mind.” Elaborated that “We have carefully considered all options, with our commitment towards the growth of women’s football.”
Ceferin refuted the views that the women’s event could have been an afterthought. He explained that the reason for shifting women’s Euro to 2022 was to ensure that it receives the “the spotlight it deserves.”
As per plan, the final of women’s Euro is to be played at Wembley, which is also the location for both semifinals and the final of the men’s tournament. Sue Campbell the English FA’s director of women’s football clarified that the host nation has supported the decision to delay the tournament by a year.
