Joshua Cheptegei the long distance runner from Uganda, set a new 5,000 metres world record with an outstanding performance timed at 12:35.36 in the Monaco Diamond League, held at Stade Louis II.
He smashed the 16 years old previous record of 12:37.35, which was set at Hengelo by the Ethiopian runner Kenenisa Bekel, when he was 21 years old in 2004.
Cheptegei went through 3,000m in just 7:31 minutes and ended up in 12:35.36. The runner up was the Kenyan Nicholas Kimeli with performance of 12:51.78 that is 6 seconds more than the new world record. The 3rd slot was also won by a Kenyan Jacob Krop with timing of 12:51.78.
After the new record, Cheptegei has thanked the crew of Global Sports.
The Ugandan also holds the 5000m world road record with time of 12:51, which he created in Monaco during February 2020 Further, Cheptegei also became the world champion in 10,000m by winning the World Championship in Doha during 2019.
