CPE-Spanish Paralympic Committee announced that 82 athletes are classified to play the Paralympic Games in Tokyo during 2021.
80 are disable athletes who are divided as follows: Athletics (12), Wheelchair Basketball (24, Both combined), Cycling (2), Football for the Blind (10), Swimming (24), Canoeing (2), Taekwondo (1), Table Tennis (6) and Shooting (1).
CPE elaborated that Athletics can also get additional berths in Tokyo Olympics at the Marathon World Cup 2021 and through the international ranking systems, and from high-performance brands. In 2019 Alberto Suárez, Gustavo Nieves, Kim López, Héctor Cabrera, Yassine Ouhdadi, Iván Cano, Meritxell Playá and Adiaratou Iglesias achieved, but now, due to the postponement of the Games till 2021, they must again regain their prime form, achieving at least a brand ‘B’, by the deadline which ends on 14th June, 2021. A form that López, Cabrera, Cano e Iglesias, and Desirée Vila already possessed last weekend.
The CPE explained that Spain still has possibilities to participate in 9 additional sports, most of them based on the rankings that will close in the coming months such as Badminton (1st April), Wheelchair Fencing (31st April), Weightlifting (27th June), Judo (31st May), Wheelchair Tennis (7th June) and Triathlon (date to be decided).
Rowing and Archery will be subject to qualifying tournament. While Boccia, Goalball, Horse riding, Wheelchair Rugby and sitting Volleyball are most likely not represented.
