Mark Selby drew on his big match temperament to defeat Ryan Day by 10 frames to 7 at Hull and advance to the semifinals where he will meet Shaun Murphy. Four times world champion Selby was never really threatened though Day kept up regular pressure. However, Selby took advantage of Day’s mistakes and cruised to the win in a maximum 19 frames tie, scoring four century breaks along the way.

The other semifinal will be played between world no. 8 Kyren Wilson and China’s Ding Junhui, who is making first appearance of his career in this event.

In a thriller at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea defeated holders Lyon in the return leg of the quarterfinals in the penalty shootout (4 – 3) after a 2 – 1 win by Lyon tied the contest at 2 – 2 aggregate. Vanessa Gilles scored early for Lyon to make it 1 – 1 on aggregate. Host Chelsea were on the edge of elimination after Sara Dabritz made it 2 – 0 for Lyon in the second half of the extra time. However, deep into the injury time, Lauren James of Chelsea went down in the area under a challenge by Lyon’s Vicki Becho and after being advised by VAR, referee Ivana Martincic looked at the replays on the pitchside monitor and awarded penalty. Maren Mjelde kept her nerves to shoot the ball into the net and sent the tie into penalty shootout.

Chelsea will meet Barcelona in the semifinals while Arsenal will face Wolfsburg in the other semifinal.

Weather delayed the start on opening day of Valero Texas Open at San Antonio par 72 Oak Course, preventing afternoon half of the field from finishing their rounds on Thursday. 3 times major champion Padraig Harrington and veteran Matt Kuchar shared the opening day lead with 4 under 68 with M J Daffue and Roberto Diaz. 5 players were on the second spot with 3 under par 69 in the $8.9 Million event, the winner of which will earn an entry into US Masters in April. Keen contest is expected during the remaining three days.
