In Valencia Spain’s Turia stadium, the event Valencia World Record Day organised by Netherland’s Cheptegei’s NN Running Team lived up to its name.
Unfortunately, with no spectators to witness such feats, Joshua Cheptegei of Uganada demolished the Men’s 10,000 metres world record and Ethiopian star Letesenbet Gidey set a new record in the Women’s 5,000 metres event.
Joshua record time was extraordinarly 26 minutes 11.02 seconds, 6 seconds better then Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele’s previous record of 26:17:53 made in 2005.
The event name was reaffirmed when Letesenbet Gidey broke the the Women’s 5,000 metres world record with a four seconds better time of 14 minutes 6.62 seconds. The last record was of Tirunesh Dibaba, set in Oslo during 2008.
The latest feat of 24 year old Joshua Cheptegei, continues his dominant role as since 2019 he has broken three other records:
- – 2019 the 10,000 meter gold medal at World Championships in Qatar.
- – 5,000m record in Monaco’s Diamond League event.
- – 10km road racing 10 year old record was also broken in Valencia during December 2019.
