Shock results kept the spectators and players on edge alike as a number of top-seeded players were forced to exit the Australian Open before the last 16 remaining players were finalized.
Karolina Pliskova, the second-seeded Czech was the latest top-ranked player to be ousted after being defeated 6-7. 6-7 by Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the Rod Laver Arena.
Pliskova’s exit followed the earlier shock departures of world number 1 Naomi Osaka and seven-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams from the third round of Aus Open 2020.
World number 6 Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic was another causality in the whirlwind that disrupted Women’s singles category as she was beaten by the world number 31 Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit 6-0, 6-1.
Things were relatively calm in Men’s category as all top players including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer downed their respective opponents with relative ease to qualify for the last 16.
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios was the last one to secure a spot in the fourth-round qualifiers as the world number 26 survived an epic 4-hours-26-mins long match to defeat Karen Khachanov 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 6-7(7), 7-6(10-8).
