Commonwealth Games 2018 – Day 1: Highlights & Medal Standing

Artistic Gymnastics

Men’s Team Final and Individual Qualification – Subdivision 1

  • Cyprus athlete’s dominated this division as Ilias Georgiou and Marios Georgiou claimed the first two positions with 80.775 and 80.0 points each.
  • The third position came in the possession of New Zealand’s Mikhail Koudiov who came third with 79.3 points on the board.

Men’s Team Final and Individual Qualification – Subdivision 2

  • The same results as the first division were witnessed as Cyprus athlete’s Ilias Georgiou and Marios Georgiou dominated this division too to claim 1st and 2nd position followed by New Zealand’s Mikhail Koudiov who came third in this division.

Men’s Team Final and Individual Qualification – Subdivision 3

  • It was all England in this division as their athletes proved to be superior to the rest. England’s Nile Wilson, James Hall and Dominick Cunningham claimed the first three positions to leave everyone behind.

Cycling Track

Women’s B&VI Sprint Finals – Gold

  •  It was a battle between England’s Sophie Thornhill and Australia’s Jessica Gallagher. The competition was dominated by Sophie as she won the first two rounds to claim gold for her country.

Men’s B&VI 1000m Time Trial

  • Scotland’s Neil Fachie claimed Gold followed by Wale’s athlete James Ball and Australia’s Brad Henderson who took silver and bronze respectively.

Women’s 4000m Team Pursuit Finals

  • Both gold and bronze events had the same results as Team Australia came first followed New Zealand and Canada who finished with silver and bronze.

Men’s 4000m Team Pursuit Finals

  • Both gold and bronze events had the same results as Team Australia came first followed England and Canada who finished with silver and bronze.

Women’s Team Sprint Finals

  • Both gold and bronze events had the same results as Team Australia came first followed New Zealand and Canada England who finished with silver and bronze.

Men’s Team Sprint Finals

  • Both gold and bronze events had the same results as Team New Zealand came first followed England and Australia who finished with silver and bronze.

Swimming

Women’s 400m Individual Medley Final

  • England’s Aimee Willmott won Gold for her country after she put on a riveting show to leave Scotland’s Hannah Miley and Australia’s Blair Evans behind as they won silver and bronze respectively.

Men’s 400m Freestyle Final

  • Australia dominated this event as Australian athletes Mack Horton and Jack Mcloughlin won gold and silver respectively. While the bronze medal was claimed by England’s James Guy who accepted it with open arms.

Women’s 200m Freestyle Final

  • Canada’s Taylor Ruck left everyone behind as she won Gold in 200m followed by Australian’s Ariarne Titmus and Emma Mckeon who claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Men’s S14 200m Freestyle Final

  • England’s Thomas Hamer dominated the 200m race as he claimed Gold for his country followed by Australia’s Liam Schluter and Daniel Fox who won silver and bronze respectively.

Women’s S7 50m Butterfly Final

  • England’s Eleanor Robinson won Gold followed by Canada’s Sarah Mehain and Tess Routliffe who won silver and bronze respectively.

Men’s 200m Breaststroke Final

  • James Wilby of England won Gold followed by Scotland’s Ross Murdoch and Australia’s Matt Wilson who claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay Final

  • Team Australia won Gold followed by Team Canada and Team England who claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Triathlon

  • Henri Schoeman, the South African athlete won his first ever gold medal in triathlon after he dominated his fellow sportsmen. He was followed by Jacob Birtwhistle who claim silver for Australia while Scotland’s Mark Austin won the bronze medal.
  • In the women’s section Bermuda’s Flora Duffy won Gold followed by England’s Jessica Learmonth and Canada’s Joanna Brown who claimed Silver and Bronze respectively.

Weightlifting

Men’s 56 Kg Final

  • Malaysia’s Muhammad Azroy Hazalwa was the surprise package of this division as he showed extreme grit to claim the Gold medal for his country.
  • He was followed by India’s Gururaja and Srilanka’s Chaturanga Lakmal who claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Men’s 48 Kg Final

  • Indians certainly made a comeback in this division as in the women’s event Chanu Saikhom Mirabai of India showed excellent power to win Gold medal in her division.
  • She was followed by Mauritius’s Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa and Srilanka’s Dinusha Gomes who claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Men’s 62 Kg Final

  • After getting Gold in the Men’s 56 Kg Final Malaysia dominated again as  Muhamad Aznil Bidin claimed Gold for his country followed by PNG’s Morea Baru and Pakistan’s Talha Talib who won silver and bronze respectively.
