LONDON: The biggest cricket extravaganza’s – ICC Cricket World Cup is all set to begin in England. The 11th edition is back in England after a gap of 2 decades. The present world champions, Australia are set to defend their title with the hosts England being a major favourite.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 – Team Selection

The ICC – International Cricket Council announced that there will be 10 teams participating. The 8 top-ranked teams in the ICC rankings were automatically qualified. These teams are: Australia,Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

The rest 2 teams were qualified through the Qualifier round. In which the two-time World Champions, West Indies also had to compete. In a tightly-competed Qualifier round held at Zimbabwe last March, the West Indian and Afghanistan qualified and had their names included in the 10-team list.

The final list of the participating teams for the ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019 is:

The global governing body for cricket, ICC, had asked  all the  contesting teams to  announce their 15-man squads by April 23. The squads can be changed at each team’s discretion up until May 23, after aforementioned date a special approval will be needed from the ICC to make any adjustment.

According to the ICC regulations, by 30th April all teams have to submit the names of the final 15-player of the World Cup squads. By 22nd May changes can be made without requiring the approval of ICC. However, after 23rd May, all changes in the squad will have to be approved by the ICC – Event Technical Committee.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 – Format & Groups

The ICC Cricket World Cup, 2019 format is based on round-robin format same as the 1992 edition where all the 10 teams will compete against each other. 

There will be no Quarter-finals this time as was the case in the last two – 9th and 10th editions. Thereby like in 1992 edition, after playing the round-robin format, the top 4 teams will directly qualify for the Semi-finals.

In short, during 11th edition the world will get to see 45 league matches, followed by two semi-finals and obviously- the final.
