After months of rumours and speculations the date for the super fight between Floyd Mayweather and McGregor has been announced. Multiple dates had been rumoured, but the final date announced for the fight is August 26.
September 16 had primarily been discussed as the most likely date for the super fight but that slot is booked for the middleweight world bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. The Mayweather v McGregor fight cannot be held within three weeks of the Canelo v Golovkin fight in order to avoid encroachment on the promotional rights.
Interestingly, McGregor will cross over from MMA into boxing. Due to McGregor’s not having any boxing experience and Mayweather reputed to be one of the finest fighters in history, most of the observers are already expecting a mismatch.
McGregor had earlier tweeted that “THE FIGHT IS ON” to hint that a public announcement was forthcoming. The undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather confirmed via Instagram that “It’s official” on Wednesday night. McGregor beat Mayweather by a few minutes, with a joke that he probably had planned for months. In lighter vein Mayweather’s age was made fun of by “accidentally” using a photo of his 64-year-old father, instead of the fighter himself.
The Terms and financials of the deal are not yet available, but according to various media reports both the fighters are expected to make around $100 million each.
