Football-Africa Cup of Nations-Last 16 Round: Host Egypt Stunned By South Africa
South Africa shocked the favorites Egypt with a late goal from Thembinkosi Lorch in last 16 game of Africa Cup of Nations.
Lorch struck following a counterattack with just few minutes remaining to send host team out of the tournament and silenced a crowd of more than 75 thousand at the Cairo International Stadium.
Egyptian star, Liverpool’s Mo Salah could not prevent a shocking defeat, as South Africa reached to the last 16 despite Egypt’s dominance in 90 minutes play.
The Egypt goalkeeper, Mohamed El Shenaway, saved many shots going into the net to keep the game balanced. Though, Egypt kept creating opportunities to net the ball, as Mohamoud Trezeguet could not manage to complete a goal on a simple shot and hit it straight to the goal keeper. Mo Salah created another opportunity in 57th minute but Trezeguet could not complete another chance.
South African side will face Nigeria in quarter-final stage after Nigerian side put a power full show in close contest to against rivals Cameroon, reached in quarterfinals with two superb goals in just 3 minutes, winning the game by 3-2.
Odion Ighalo was the first to give Nigeria lead with a 19th-minute goal but Cameroon hit back with two goals before half time to take the lead. Nigeria, who has lost thrice against Cameroon in finals, came back strong and scored 2 goals in just 3 minutes, to end up winning the game. Nigeria and Cameroon had finished 2 nd in their group tables and had been struggling to find good form.
In other games Madagascar beats DR Congo in penalties by 4-2 after being a 2-2 match.
Algeria had an easy run against Guinea as they defeated the opponents by 3-0 in the last 16 to reach quarterfinals stage.
