Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko ranked 47th, stunned the third seed Simona Halep by beating her 4-6 6-4 6-3. Since 1933 she became the first unseeded woman to win at French Open.
This was only Jelena’s eighth Grand Slam and she had never won a Tour-level title before.
Halep upon winning this match would have become the world number one. Having won the first set she had the match in her control. However, the unseeded trailing by a set and 3-0 games down of the second set, came back to win the last two sets 6-4, 6-3.
Halep, having lost in the final to Maria Sharapova in 2014 was playing in her second French Open final. Due to the absence of Serena Williams she was the tournament favourite.
