Recognizing Innovative Contributions to Environmental Sustainability
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Deloitte announced the IOC Climate Action Awards 2024 winners, honoring outstanding environmental sustainability contributions in sports. This prestigious award recognizes innovative projects from National Olympic Committees (NOCs), International Federations (IFs), and athletes aimed at reducing the environmental impact of sports.
Athlete Category Winners
IOC Athlete Commission member and British rower, Imogen Grant, was recognized for launching the Clean Water Sport Alliance and introducing sustainable practices at the UK’s National Training Centre. Meanwhile, Bulgarian beach volleyball player and climate advocate, Lina Taylor, was honored for providing science-based climate education and coaching through her Climate Executive Coaching initiative.

National Olympic Committee Category Winner
The Swiss Olympic Committee reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 66% and established the Swiss Olympic Climate Fund, supporting national federations and partner organizations in their carbon-reduction efforts. This initiative demonstrates the committee’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
International Federation Category Winner
The FIH (International Hockey Federation) won for developing innovative “Dry Turf” technology, reducing water usage by 60% since 2012. This technology has already led to a 40% reduction in water use between London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.
Highly Commended Initiatives
The Mauritius NOC and the IBU (International Biathlon Union) were recognized for their outstanding efforts. Mauritius developed a comprehensive carbon footprint reduction plan and community-based projects, while the IBU measured and reduced broadcasting emissions during the 2023/24 World Cup season.
