Highlights:
· Both teams i.e. KKR and Rajasthan Royals knew that if they had win this match their chances of qualifying for the play-offs would take a huge boost. However, the advantage was always going to be on Kolkata’s side as the match was being held on their hom-ground plus they had a spin-packed bowling attack.
· The match started as the toss was won by Kolkata Knight Riders and they chose to field first, a viable choice considering their spin attack and the nature of the pitch. So, Rajasthan Royals came out as Rahul Triphati and Jos Buttler opened the innings for their team.
· Buttler was in exquisitive form and Tripathi hoped to showcase his skills as an opener once again. As expected, both of these batsman gave their team a flying start as KKR bowlers were bashed all over the ground in the 1st 4 overs.
· But, after Russell got the wicket of Tripathi in the 5th over, KKR successfully managed to sneak through their batting line-up as no other batsman other than Buttler and Unadkat could face KKR’s superior bowling attack.
· Wickets fell one after the other as KKR bowling attack led by Kuldeep Yadav and Russell didn’t allow Rajasthan Royals to attain a big target. In the end, Unadkat showed some potential and his 18-ball 26 in the last overs allowed Rajasthan to save face and post a defendable total on the board.
· Now, it was KKR’s turn and they needed 143 runs to win from 20 overs, a task that seemed quite easy considering KKR’s batting line-up. So, the 2nd innings started as KKR’s prolific pair consisting of Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine walked on the crease.
· A similar start was made from both of them, especially from Narine who made 21-runs in 7 balls before giving his wicket to Stokes in the 2nd over. Robin Uthappa now joined Lynn but his stay was also cut short by Ben Stokes as he got out in the 4th over.
. This was a perfect time for the Royals to take control of this match but that was not going to happen as Nitish Rana provided KKR with a much needed partnership of 33-runs with Chris Lynn to avoid any collapses.
· However, after Rana was given lbw courtesy of Ish Sodhi’s bowling, it was Dinesh Karthik and Chris Lynn upon whom, Kolkata relid the most on and they delivered as expected as both these batsmen took KKR to the edge of victory.
· Chris Lynn got out in the 16th over after a well-made 45 as Stokes took his 3rd wicket of the match but it hardly mattered as the remaining runs were scored comfortably by Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell as they finished the match in the 18th over and KKR won by 6 wickets.
· After this win, KKR has now moved to the 3rd position in the table and are only one win away from making it to the play-offs.
