IPL 2018: Do Sunrisers Hyderabad Have The Strongest Bowling Attack?
Sunrisers coach, Tom Moody followed the same approach in this IPL auction as he had done in the previous ones. SRH were there with one goal i.e. to stock up quality Indian pacers and spinners.
One may think that they are first team to do so, however that is not the case. Investing heavily in the bowling department is a strategy that many teams have used successfully in the past.
Justin Langer, who is the current coach of Perth Scorchers (Big Bash League) has followed the same principles and led his team to 3 Big Bash titles and 2 runner-up finishes.
This approach is valid for all formats of T20 cricket. And, this is where I would like to quote Pakistan’s bowling coach, Azhar Ali who uttered a beautiful line after Pakistan’s memorable Champion Trophy’s win.
He said:” Batsmen win you matches, Bowlers win you tournaments”. This philosophy has been a strong suite of Sunrisers Hyderabad and it also allowed them to win IPL championship in 2016.
Now coming to this IPL season, Sunrisers have proven this theory yet again. As, their bowling is the best in every phase; whether it is powerplay, middle overs or at the death, Sunrisers have got the bowling strength to perform in each one of these phases.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have bowlers in every department. When it comes to spin there is Rashid Khan, Shakib Al Hasan and there is a long list of Indian pacers including Siddharth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma, Basil Thampi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
This shows that SRH has also a strong bench as if one of their bowlers get injured they have an immediate replacement for him.
What have Sunrisers achieved so far with this bowling attack?
Sunrisers Hyderabad have outdone themselves this season, as they went on to defend 118 and 132, totals that are worth nothing nowadays. However, their superior bowling attack has not allowed opposition batsmen to score freely in any game.
SRH are now 3 out of 4 parameters checked in their bowling attack i.e. Wickets taken, economy rate and average. The only parameter that they are behind in is strike rate in which Mumbai Indians have taken the lead.
However, this approach has taken Sunrisers Hyderabad to the top of the IPL table. And, if they continue this approach they might even win the IPL trophy.
Sunrisers currently hold the 1st spot in the IPL points table. Have a look:
