On the match Day-26 at Real Madrid’s home, Santiago Bernabeu, the El Classico between the arch-rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona kicked off with both teams pumped on from the very starting minute.
This heated contest was even more significant in the sense that the team that would come out on top would take the top of the table spot of La Liga. The match did live up to its hype and every minute of the game was the treat to watch for the fans.
The teams continually made chances throughout the first half but neither of the sides could manage to net the ball. The best of the shots on goal was Isco’s header which was cleared on the goal-line by Gerrard Pique. With what was an evenly poised first half of football, the score line was 0-0 after the referee blew the whistle of the first half.
The second half kicked off with Barcelona possessing the ball for a greater period than Real Madrid but Real Madrid’s manager, Zinedine Zidane’s change of tactics started being blatantly obvious just as Real’s players taking charge immediately on the field. Casemiro was seen man marking Barca’s best player, Lionel Messi while others looked all geared up to defend Barcelona’s ball in the opposition’s half to the greatest extent they could.
In the 71st minute of the game after a beautiful ball from Toni Kroos, the pacey Vinicius Junior made his way into Barcelona’s box with a strike that ricocheted off Gerard Pique, flummoxing the goalie Marc-Andre ter Stergen who had already made some wonderful saves throughout the game to score the opening goal for Real Madrid. Real Madrid now led 1-0.
After Real Madrid’s goal, Barcelona looked for a chance to fight back, not only for the game but for the top spot as well. Real Madrid’s defense, however, provided them with such a strong wall that their resistance seemed impossible for the FC Barcelona’s strikers and mid-fielders to beat and Barcelona barely had any shots on goal even after Real Madrid’s opener.
In the additional three minutes of the 90 minutes of play, Zidane’s substitution of Mariano Diaz of Dominican Republic proved to be so vital that the newcomer not just made an entry for two minutes but ended up scoring a goal for his team as well, giving Real Madrid an unassailable lead of two goals due to time constraints for FC Barcelona. Just as the clock hit the 93rd minute, the referee blew the whistle for the full time and Real Madrid won an important league game and are top of the table yet again.
