Samina Khayal Baig becomes the first Pakistani woman to successfully ascend the world’s second highest peak K2 locally called Chogori. Due to being one of the most dangerous peaks to climb, it is commonly known as the savage mountain.
At 07:42 PKT on 22 July’2022, Pakistan’s Samina Baig succeeded to reach the top of the world’s second highest peak – K2 – along with a team of seven other local mountaineers. The 31-year-old is a Pakistani high-altitude mountain climber who is also regarded as the first Pak woman to have climbed Mount Everest during May 2013 at the age of 21.

By 2014, she managed to scale the Seven Summits in all seven continents at an age of 24 years. Hours after Samina Baig’s summit, another Pakistani woman named Naila Kiani ascended the K2 later that day. Due to the notoriously volatile weather of K2, a total of around 425 mountaineers have scaled the summit yet, out of which 20 are women.
Pakistan is home to five out of the world’s fourteen highest mountain peaks, also known as the “eight thousanders”.
