MELBOURNE: Austria’s Dominic Thiem was the last player to qualify for the Australian Open singles title championship after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 in an epic semi-final that lasted for 4 hours and 43 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
The world number five Thiem will meet the world number 2 Novak Djokovic in his first ever Men’s singles final who downed the third seeded Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 in the first semi final earlier in the day. This will be Serbian player’s 8 th Australian Open Final presence and 17th major victory if he wins.
In Women’s singles American Sofia Kenin and Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza will be facing off for the top spot after downing world number one Ash Barty and Simona Halep in their respective semi-finals.
Australian Open 2020 Doubles Draws & Results
Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos trounced top seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-1 to claim the women’s doubles title repeating their earlier similar achievement in last year’s WTA finals. The American pair sailed through the match without dropping a single set.
Finalists of Men’s doubles event have also been finalized with Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram set to play Australian pair of Luke Saville and Max Purcell for the title on Sunday.
In mixed doubles, Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Czech Barbora Krejcikova beat third seeds Gabriella Dabrowski and Henri Kontinen 3-6 6-3 10-5 to secure a spot in the final. They will be facing the experience duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray for the ultimate title.
