The Rugby governing body, World Rugby will sponsor the Olympic-Qualified Teams for the Tokyo Olympics 2020-2021. World Rugby Chief Executive Brett Gosper announced the decision and shared the sponsorship details.
The Tokyo Olympics was to take place during 2020, however, the novel virus forced the authorities to delay it for an year. As of now, it is scheduled to take place on 23rd July 2021.
World Rugby will sponsor an amount of £ 1.86 million to be shared among 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams that qualify to participate in Tokyo Olympics. The funding will be spent on training of the qualified teams to optimise their performance for Olympics.
In the men’s category 11 teams have qualified so far whereas in the women’s category 10 teams have qualified. One slot is vacant in men’s category and 2 in women’s category. These vacant slots will be filled in due course of time.
