UEFA Champions League Recap: Week 5 – Day 1Â
The recap of the matches played on 22nd November:
CSKA Moscow 2-0 Benfica:
CSKA Moscow kept their hopes of qualification to the next round alive with a solid performance against Benfica, who continued their poor run of form in this year’s tournament in which they have lost all of their matches. Georgi Shchennikov opened the scoring early before an own goal by Jardel on 56 minutes put the game to bed.
Sporting 3-1 Olympiacos:
At the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Sporting convincingly beat Olympiacos to keep pace with Juventus in the race for the second qualifying place in Group D. Â A Bruno Cesar goal sandwiched in between a Bas Dost double meant that Sporting were in cruise control for most of the game. Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe grabbed a late consolation goal.
Qarabag FK 0-4 Chelsea:
Chelsea put in an efficient performance to get a comfortable away win against Qarabag. The Qarabag team were already up against it before a debatable red card to Rashad Sadygov put Chelsea firmly in the driving seat. Eden Hazard converted the penalty given due to Rashad’s foul. Willian scored two goals after that and Cesc Fabregas chipped in with one as well.
FC Basel 1-0 Manchester United:
FC Basel produced the shock of the night by scoring a late winner against Manchester United and in the process kept themselves firmly in contention for a place in the round of 16. In the first half, Manchester United dominated possession and came close to taking the lead.   However, FC Basel showed more intent in the second half and Manchester United’s performance levels dipped. This resulted in a last gasp goal for the Swiss side which sets up an intriguing final match day for Group A.
Anderlecht 1-2 Bayern:
Bayern got the three points but were made to work hard by an energetic Anderlecht side. Lewandowski’s opener was canceled out by Hanni before a Tolisso goal thirteen minutes from time handed Bayern an important victory.
Atletico Madrid 2-0 Roma:
Atletico Madrid put in a good performance to win against an off color Roma side. Goals from Antoine Greizmann and Kevin Gameiro were enough to beat the Italian side who went down to ten men in the 83rd minute when Bruno Peres was sent off. AS Roma still have their fate in their own hands though, and can qualify with a win against Qarabag FK in their final group stage match.
Juventus 0-0 Barcelona:
Juventus and Barcelona played out an evenly contested, goalless draw at the Juventus Stadium. Barcelona enjoyed the majority of possession but failed to score a goal. Lionel Messi started on the bench and was unable to work his magic after coming on in the 56th minute.
Paris Saint-Germain 7-1 Celtic:
Paris Saint-Germain continued their red-hot form in this year’s competition and thumped Celtic at home. The French side scored seven goals with the deadly front three of Neymar, Mbappe, Cavani all on top form and scoring goals. Marco Verrati and Dani Alves also scored a goal apiece as the reigning Ligue 1 champions made it five wins out of five.
