#2 Luka Modric – Croatia
From his breath taking performances against Russia to his tearing apart of Argentina, Modric became the golden boy for Croatia. The Croatian was also the leader of the his team’s mid-field at the World Cup 2018. This was evident from his perfect passes and wriggling the ball into tight spaces which then converted into a goal.
Such was influence of the Croatian midfielder on his team that he almost led his side to glory for the first time ever in World Cup history. Modric made an upgrade to his legendary status in the World Cup and overachieved for Croatia to lead them into the finals.
Hearts broke when the 32-year-old could not take his side to their first World Cup win. However, no one was surprised when the Los Blancos player won the Golden Ball of the tournament.
#1 Kylian Mbappe – France
‘Good things come to those who wait’. While the aforementioned statement may be true for most of us, it is the opposite for the French sensation, Kylian Mbappe. Of only 19 years of age, Mbappe shot to fame and the world finally saw the successor to the contemporary legends, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
His talent was already known at a club level, however his true colors emerged at the international stage namely the World Cup. Mbappe’s brutal pace and his understanding of the football game made him a terrified individual among the opposition’s defenders.
His brilliant run against Argentina to his long range goal in the World Cup final, all of this made Mbappe the most influential youngster of the World Cup 2018.
Honourable Mentions
The following players did not make it to the Allsportspk top 10 footballers list. However, their performances have earned them an honorable mention. Have a look:
Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal
Ronaldo announced himself at the World Cup 2018 in the group stages, by scoring a hattrick against Spain. This was a record in and itself, as the Portuguese star became the oldest player to achieve this feat.
However, like every other time, Ronaldo did not get the required support from Portugal as they were ousted from the World Cup in the Round of 16.
Harry Kane – England
Kane was the 2nd highest goal scorer in the Premier league and the English star also shined at the World Cup as he won the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals(6).
However, his failure to score at the knock out stages is the reason as to why he is not present in the Top 10 list.
Yerry Mina – Colombia
Yerry Mina was one of the big reasons behind Colombia’s run in to the Round of 16. His unparalleled abilities namely, his aerial prowess and physicality allowed him to score three imperative goals for Colombia.
His performances were recognized so much so that he will soon be playing in the English Premier League as a defender.
