World Junior Squash C’ships, India: Men’s Upset As Mostafa beats No. 1; Rowan Wins Women’s Title
The finals of WSF World Junior Individual Squash Championships played at Chennai, concluded with expected and unexpected results.
Men’s final:
- Mostafa Asal (Egy) bt Marwan Tarek (Egy) 11-7, 13-11, 11-4 (45 minutes)
Women’s final:
- Rowan Reda Araby (Egy) bt Hania El Hammamy (Egy) 11-4, 11-9, 10-12, 11-9 (65 minutes)
The women’s final was won by top seed Rowan Reda Araby as expected. The upset was in the men’s final as Mostafa Asal defeated the No. 1 seed and the defending champion Marwan Tarek in straight games.
Rowan won the two opening games but then failed to convert three match-balls in the third before Hania took the game 12-10 to force the fourth game.
The 17 year old from Alexandria, Egypt regained her composure in the fourth game to finish the match and win the Junior title for a second year in a row.
With this win Rowan became the fourth Egyptian to win successive women’s titles after Nouran Gohar – 2016, Nour El Sherbini – 2013 and Raneem El Welily – 2007.
World Junior Squash Championships, India: Seeded Egyptian Finals
The World Junior Squash Championship was competed by the two top seeds and interestingly this was the first time that the two had played against each other in an international competition.
Mostafa had reached the final without dropping a game and continued his undefeated performance in Chennai as he won over Marwan in straight games to win for the first time the world junior title.
